China's deepest geothermal scientific exploration well, deployed by China Petrochemical Corporation, was officially completed on Thursday, the company said.

As the country's first deep geothermal scientific exploration well exceeding 5,000 meters, located in Haikou, Hainan province, the project represents a breakthrough in deep geothermal resource exploration in South China, they said.

This project aims to advance high-temperature geothermal applications for power generation, cooling, and integrated uses in southern parts of China, supporting the region's green and low-carbon energy transition, they added.

Completed in April at a depth of 5,200 meters, it set a record for the deepest geothermal exploration well in China and Asia. The project will further reveal the mechanisms of deep geothermal formation and enrichment in the region and explore its high-temperature geothermal potential.

The company, also known as Sinopec, plans to develop it into an integrated research, industry, and application platform and demonstration base for high-temperature geothermal resources in South China. Sinopec will also explore further applications of geothermal resources, advancing geothermal exploration and development theory and technology across southern China and beyond.

Sinopec, China's largest developer of geothermal energy, currently has a strong presence in the geothermal sector. To date, the company has developed a geothermal heating capacity covering over 100 million square meters, it said.
