On 8th June, Shu Yinbiao, Chairman of State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) attended the Eighth Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM-8) and the Second Mission Innovation Ministerial (MI-2) and delivered a speech in the meeting. He pointed out that SGCC will seriously implement the basic national policy of resource conservation and environmental protection, promote green development and lifestyle, optimize energy structure, safeguard energy security and push forward the construction of ecological civilization as part of the multilateral efforts to promote global climate governance for a better future.

        According to Shu Yinbiao, in recent years, with deteriorating problems of resource depletion, environmental pollution and climate change, it is imperative to accelerate energy transition and gradually build up a secure, economical, efficient and sustainable energy system with clean energy as the major source of power. In promoting the transition to a clean and low-carbon energy development, re-electrification is the fundamental way out and grid is the core. With the deep integration of energy technology and IT technology, building a coordinated, interactive, smart and friendly energy interconnection with strong and smart grid as the basis could secure the flexible connection of different energy producers and consumers to power grid, meet diversified and personalized demands of power users and deepen the process of electrification, which will make power grid a fundamental platform in energy transition.

        Shu Yinbiao said that in June 2014, President Xi Jinping proposed the strategic vision of "Four Revolutions and One Cooperation" as the guidance for energy transition in China. Following the development concept of "innovation, coordination, green development, openness and mutual sharing", SGCC sticks to innovation-driven growth, increases the input in R&D, develops key technologies, gives full play to the role of grid as the hub and platform in energy system and promotes the transition to green and low-carbon energy development.  Significant progress so far has been made. Moreover, SGCC has been actively developing UHV transmission technologies which have huge potential in South America, Africa and other parts of Asia. At the present, in China there are 20 UHV projects under operation and construction with a total length of more than 30,000 km. Beyond that, SGCC is also promoting the replacement of other sources of energy with electric power in energy production and the replacement of coal and oil by electricity in energy consumption. The company now has built up the world's largest "six vertical, six horizontal and two ring" express highway fast charging network, greatly promoting the development of "Internet + charging facilities". What's more, SGCC is also committed to make the power grid smarter through carrying out grid upgrading and improving connection of micro grid, distributed energy sources, EV battery charging system and other new energy facilities into power grid, and using "Internet +" to improve grid operation and maintenance, as well as customer service. SGCC is at the same time making efforts to improve the security and stability of large grid. In the past 20 years, it is the only mega grid in the world that has no large scale blackout, providing strong guarantee for energy transition and the development of new energy.

        Shu Yinbiao elaborated in his speech that promoting the transition to clean energy is a shared topic of all countries and a common responsibility of energy companies around the world. He further proposed four suggestions in this regard: (1) ensuring sufficient investment, particularly in new energy and smart grid, so as to continuously promote energy mix restructuring and clean development; (2) strengthening technological cooperation, focusing on the development of key technologies in energy transition, to achieve early breakthroughs in grid-friendly new energy power generation, large-scale efficient energy storage and a new generation of smart grid technologies; (3) promoting inclusive development, to eliminate "energy poverty" and realize the goal of "Sustainable Energy for All" as early as possible; (4) speeding up connectivity by reinforcing coordination and consolidation of policies, standards and infrastructure among countries, with an aim to meet global energy demand with clean and green alternatives. SGCC will strengthen communications, intensify cooperation and make joint efforts with its global partners to promote a multilateral global climate governance for a bright future of the energy industry.

        During the meeting, Shu Yinbiao also met with Mr. Adnan Z. Amin, Director-General of International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). The two leaders signed a Memorandum of Understanding to enhance their cooperation, under the guidance of the Paris Agreement, the Belt and Road Initiative and other global and regional proposals, on large proportion renewable energy integration, grid infrastructure assessment, grid connectivity, grid operation system telecommunication and smart grid technology, to jointly promote energy transition towards a low-carbon and clean and green model.

        On 7th June, Shu Yinbiao met with the delegation led by Mr. Peter Joslashrgensen, President and CEO of ENERGINET. Mr. Wang Min, Senior Vice President of SGCC, signed a Framework Agreement on Cooperation between SGCC and ENERGINET  with his Danish counterpart on behalf of the company. According to the agreement, the two sides will deepen cooperation in new energy capacity forecast, high penetration new energy dispatching, control and operation, key technology in power system peak regulation, and large-scale high-voltage grid system technology. Mr. Zhu Guangchao, Deputy Chief Engineer and Director of the Department of International Cooperation and representatives of the Research Office, Department of Development and Planning and Beijing Power Exchange Center also attended the meeting.

        On 8th June, Shu Yinbiao met with the delegation led by Mr. Lloyd Blankfein, CEO of Goldman Sachs. The two sides exchanged ideas on how to jointly promote the Belt and Road Initiative and further cooperate in overseas investment, merger and acquisition, overseas debt issuance and financial derivative trading, and financial risk management. Mr. Zhu Guangchao, Deputy Chief Engineer and Director of the Department of International Cooperation, also attended the meeting.
