Kazakhstan is the first stop on “Economic Belt along the Silk Road”. In December 2008, CGN signed a contract with Kazatomprom in Kazakhstan to set up Semizbay-U LLP, the first overseas natural uranium project invested, mined and operated by Chinese company. CGN together with Kazatomprom have developed two ore fields, Irkol and Semizbay, which had achieved the design capacity since 2012.
Based on the developing of uranium mines, CGN is constantly deepening and broadening the cooperation with Kazatomprom. In December 2016, witnessed by the president of Kazakhstan Nazarbayev, the construction of Sino-Kazakh fuel assembly factory with a designed annual output of 200 tons of uranium was started, which was planned to operate for at least 20 years. This project brings about a win-win situation for both countries; it is a landmark on both “the Belt and Road” and “Nurly Zhol”.
