It is subject to an investment project of POWERCHINA group in promoting strategic implementation of overseas whole industrial chain integration; it is also the only Chinese-funded company in Laos with the hydropower station project featuring whole-basin overall planning, investment and development. Being developed in two phases of “one-reservoir, seven-grade”, it has an installed gross capacity up to 1,272,000 kW, the average annual output of 5 billion kWh, the total investment of about 2.8 billion US dollars and licensed operation period of 29 years.
Construction units of the project were all key enterprises from POWERCHINA, which had realized whole industrial chain coverage from prophase planning, survey and design, mid-term construction and building and later operation and management. Nam Ou River I (2nd, 5th and 6th-stage power station) was initiated in October of 2012; by the end of April of 2016, operation and power generation of all units were realized. The first unit started to generate power four months in advance. The project has served not only as a remarkable tribute to the 40th anniversary for the founding of Laos, but also as a good start for cooperation and joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative by China and Laos; it has established a new paradigm for power energy cooperation between two countries.
