POWERCHINA wins Luban Prize for overseas construction projects

Four overseas construction projects of the Power Construction Corporation of China (POWERCHINA) swept the highest prize in China’s building industry – the Luban Prize -- on Nov 25.

The four projects are the Nam Ngum 5 in Laos, the Murum Hydro-power Station in Malaysia, the Kariba North-shore Hydro-power Station extension project in Zambia, and the Ferro Hydro-power Station in Mali.

The Nam Ngum 5 in Laos

The Nam Ngum 5, with a total capacity of 120 MW and an average annual generation of around 500 GWh, was POWERCHINA’s first build-operate-transfer (BOT) project in Laos. Local electricity demands for industrial and agricultural construction will be satisfied, but the majority of electricity will be exported to Thailand and Vietnam to control floods and promote tourism and aquaculture.

Ferro Hydro-power Station in Mali

The Ferro Hydro-power station was the largest project constructed by Chinese companies in Mali. With a total installed capacity of 63 MW, the project was backed by Mali, Senegal, Mauritania and Guinea.

Murum Hydro-power Station in Malaysia

The Murum Hydro-power Station in Malaysia, with a total capacity of 944 MW, was a demonstration hydro-power project in Malaysia. It received the international milestone construction award for an RCC Dam, given by the International Commission on Large Dams.

Kariba North-shore Hydro-power Station in Zambia

The Kariba North-shore Hydro-power Station extension project was the first independently-developed energy project in Zambia since the country’s independence. The project involves adding two more 180-MW machine sets, which will increase the country’s power supply by 18 percent.

POWERCHINA has been focusing on construction quality with the aim of becoming a leader in China's power and water conservancy industries. To date, the corporation and its subsidiaries have gained 81 Luban Prizes, including 15 for overseas projects, awarded for work in Tajikistan, India, Iran, Ethiopia, Angola, Sudan, Cambodia, Oman, Mauritania, Belarus, Sri Lanka, Laos, Mali, Malaysia and Zambia.
